Land remediation in Italy
In Italy, there are over 240,000 hectares of areas potentially requiring remediation. (Edison analysis of MASE and Regions data 2021). According to Ispra, only 19% of the proceedings initiated for the remediation of contaminated areas are in the remediation phase (“Lo stato delle bonifiche dei siti contaminati in Italia” Ispra 2023).
Sites of National Priority (SINs): approximately 170,000 hectares of land and approximately 78,000 hectares of sea areas
Sites of Regional Priority (SIRs): over 75,000 hectares
Orphan sites: more than 2,000 hectares of mostly uncharacterised land
